The Nintendo DS by itself is a really great gaming system. But when you put the NDS together with the R4 DS and mix it up, a whole slew of homebrew games come to life and are yours for the taking, often times better than or equal to commercial games in stores.
1) LemmingsDS – An amazing classic game and it’s back. Strategy, comedy and awesome gameplay!
Lemmings was a huge hit on the Commodore Amiga computer. It was later remade for the Commodore C64 and IBM PC’s too.I honestly think that this game actually set the standard for many of our favorite strategy / puzzle games. All 120 of the original Amiga levels have been carefully redone for the Nintendo DS.So you get every single, identical stage/level originally created for the Amiga computer, and later the C64 computer as well.A must have game for anyone that loves funny, classic style games.
2) Quake DS – While not the first – it really is the orignal FPS game!
It is the first and standard setting Quake that was released over 10 years ago for the PC. Can’t realy say anything more.Quite possibly the best game and in my opinion that game that inspire the whole first person genre. It is now available for the NDS / NDSi but you’ll need an R4 DS Card to play it with.Masterfully re-created for the Nintendo DS, DS Lite and the new Nintendo DSi system.
3) Xrick – A Port of Rick Dangerous for your Nintendo DS – It was arguably one of the best platform games / side scrollers on classic computers like the C64 and the Commodore Amiga
One of those classic games that you can’t seem to shake and have to play ove and over.Put xRick on your Nintendo DS and start playing one of the best side scroller / platform game every made.Rick Dangerous was the must have side scroller of the day.Anyone that did not have a Nintendo DS system had either one or both of these games in lieu of. Side Scrolling adventure game taken to the max. Challenging, great graphics, and loads of fun!
4) DSLinux Turns Your NDS into a full blown linux hand held – complete with many of the same applications you’d find on linux
Ah yes, DS Linux. Before cards like the R4 DS Card, it was unimaginable for us to be able to load linux onto a system that fit in the palm of our hands. While there are many linux ports now, on various hand held consoles, none of them even come close to the Nintendo DS version on an R4 DS Card because no other console really utilizes touch the way that the Nintendo DS does. Because you can use your Stylus as mouse, you really get the full benefit of loading all of your favorite linux games, applications, etc… rigth onto your Nintendo DS. The R4 DS Card makes it possible to take linux to a whole new platform. If you have a Nintendo DSi, then you’ll need the R4i SDHC version of the R4 DS Card.
5) ScummVM – Your point and click solution to the best point and Click Games!
If you’re a fan, past or present, of point and click adventure games such as Monkey Island, Beneath a Steel Sky, and others, then you must have ScummVM DS. ScummVM DS is a part of the ScummVM project. The ScummVM project is an attempt to re-engineer many classic point and click adventure games of the 80s and 90s to run on modern computer hardware. Technology has changed a lot since these games were written, and so ScummVM attempts to replicate the gameplay of the original games in exacting details, without any of the original code that the game ran on. ScummVM needs a copy of the original game, in order to take the graphics, sound, and scripts that made the game work. ScummVM is written in such a way that it can be ‘ported’ from one type of machine to another, and ScummVM DS is a port of ScummVM to the Nintendo DS handheld games console.
That concludes my homebrew games reviews for this week.In the coming weeks I will review and talk about some of the best emulators of classic computers and game systems – that you can actually play and use with your Nintendo DS
